Criminology (B.A.)

The Criminology major prepares students for graduate study in criminology, sociology, or law and entry-level positions in criminal justice agencies.

Requirements for the criminology major are listed below. Criminology majors take a 15-semester hour core curriculum along with 18 semester hours of criminology electives. Students contemplating employment in a criminal justice agency should take CRIM 431: Practicum in Criminology. Students considering careers in criminal justice agencies are encouraged to consider taking courses in Spanish to complete their Global Perspectives and Cultures requirement. Psychology is a helpful minor.

Note: Criminology Majors may take PSY 302 Forensic Psychology and PSY 345 Crisis Intervention to count toward their major electives in Criminology, except in cases where a student is also majoring in Psychology (in which case the courses can only count in one of the two majors).

Students whose first major is Psychology or Sociology and who choose a second major in Criminology may count SOC 230/PSY 230 and SOC 309/PSY 309 towards both majors. Students who take this option must replace SOC/PSY 230 and SOC 309/PSY 309 with 6 credit hours of elective courses in Criminology.
