POL 301 Public Service Organizations and Leadership

This survey course focuses on leading public service organizations in liberal democracies, with particular focus on the United States. Students will explore a broad range of public service areas, including government agencies, nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations, volunteerism, and community-based initiatives. Emphasis is placed upon democratic principles and obligations, ethical frameworks, and practical strategies for effectively leading public service organizations. Topics include philosophical underpinnings of public service in liberal democracies, public service motivation, decision-making, and intergovernmental collaboration. Through case studies. interactive discussions, and activities students will connect theory to practice, preparing for leadership and advocacy roles in addressing complex societal challenges.
