Action Item(s)

  1. Action Item(s) from a Remediation or Accountability Hearing are intended to be educational and meet one or more of the following goals:

    1. Reflection

      1. Content knowledge: The Action Item is designed to help the student to increase knowledge of content regarding a specific topic or special issue.
      2. Self-Reflection: The Action Item is designed to help the student to increase self-awareness of the appropriateness or inappropriateness of their behavior.
      3. Impact on personal well-being: The Action Item is designed to help the student to increase their self-awareness of the potential physical or psychological impact of their behavior
      4. Impact on personal future: The Action Item is designed to help the student to increase their self-awareness of the potential impact their behavior may have on relationships with others, academic major or course of study, or future career.
    2. Restoration & Restitution

      1. The Action Item is designed to help the student to increase their understanding of how their behavior impacted or potentially could have impacted others.
      2. The Action Item may be designed to help the student to increase understanding of community and/or societal standards, the reasons for them, and how their actions may adversely affect their successful interaction within the community and/or society.
      3. The Action Item is also intended to reestablish balance and order to the affected community.
    3. Deterrence

      1. The Action Item is designed to prevent subsequent violations of the Student Code of Conduct or other University standards, up to and including separation from the institution.
  2. Consideration will be given to the following when determining the appropriate Action Item(s):

    1. The seriousness of the violation;
    2. Whether there is a minimum Action Item(s) already established for the violation in the Student Code of Conduct;
    3. Precedence from the past and/or similar cases;
    4. Whether or not the Respondent was dishonest and/or uncooperative;
    5. The specific circumstances surrounding the violation; and
    6. Whether or not the Respondent has a prior conduct record(s), especially for similar offenses or for a pattern of behaviors inconsistent with the Student Code of Conduct and any other University standard.
  3. A range of possible Action Items include but are not limited to:

    1. Apology: A formal letter of apology that acknowledges an understanding of how behavior has impacted others.
    2. Education: Educational programs, such as online alcohol education, alcohol and drug diversion program, and fire safety workshops.
    3. Campus Access Limitations
    4. Community Service / Work Hours
    5. Degree Withholding: The university reserves the right to withhold the awarding of any degree for conduct matters, including but not limited to Student Code of Conduct, Sexual Misconduct, and academic integrity violations.
    6. Disciplinary Probation: A period of time during which any further violation of the Student Code of Conduct puts the student’s enrollment status with the University in jeopardy. If a student is found responsible for any Student Code of Conduct violation during this probationary period, serious consideration will be given to imposing a sanction of suspension for no less than one academic semester. The student will be required to meet with a Student Life administrator during this period.
    7. Expulsion: The permanent termination of a student’s enrollment. The student is not allowed on campus. A student expelled during the semester is subject to the loss of all tuition, fees and coursework during that semester.
    8. Fine: Payment by the student of reasonable monetary fines to Enrollment Services as a result of student conduct action. These monetary payments may be for accountability purposes as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. In the event a student is responsible for multiple Student Code of Conduct violations with an associated fine, the total fines assessed to the student shall not exceed $500 per incident. This limit does not account for any relevant restitution for damage or destruction of property. Fines are applied to the costs of substance use and abuse educational programs, support preventative training and programs, and professional development for risk assessment staff. Students who have extreme financial need, as defined by the Office of Financial Aid, may request to complete work hours in exchange for the assigned fine. All requests are reviewed by the Assistant Dean of Student Conduct or designee, as appropriate.
    9. Housing Relocation
    10. Housing Suspension: Removal of a student from campus housing for a determined period of time. While a student is suspended, they may be prohibited from entering campus housing altogether.
    11. Parental Notification: Coker University values the involvement of parents and guardians in the educational process. The University reserves the right to notify parents of dependent students and ALL students under age 21 of violations of the campus drug and alcohol policies in compliance with FERPA regulations. Parents may also be notified when their student is placed on disciplinary probation, suspended, expelled or loses housing privileges.
    12. Program/Activity Limitation: The student may have limitations placed on their ability to participate or hold leadership positions in specific clubs, organizations, athletic teams and/or any other campus program or activity, including commencement.
    13. Reflection/Research Paper: Student must write a paper reflecting on this incident and what they have learned from it. They must consider the potential ramifications of their actions and what they have learned from the incident. They must consider how they will use what they have learned in future decision-making.
    14. Restitution: Payment by the student of reasonable monetary funds to Enrollment Services as a result of student conduct action. These monetary payments may be for accountability purposes because of damage to persons or property or misappropriation of property.
    15. Substance Abuse Assessment: Student must have a substance abuse assessment and complete the recommended treatment. Student is responsible for the cost of the evaluation and any subsequent recommended treatment.
    16. Substance Testing: random drug testing (minimum of six) over the course of two semesters or through the probationary period as determined on a case-by-case basis.  Failure to complete a drug test within the given period will be treated as a positive result.  Diluted samples will result in additional testing.
    17. Suspension: A separation from the institution for a defined period. Removal of a student from the University will permit the student to apply for readmission at the end of the suspension period. Readmission to the University is not guaranteed and will be granted only when a student is able to demonstrate to the Readmission Committee that they have productively used the suspension period in a way that establishes a strong foundation for successfully completing their Coker education. A student suspended during the semester is subject to the loss of all tuition, fees and coursework during that semester.  While a student is suspended, they may not return to the campus or participate in any programs or activities of the University without written permission from the Student Experience Office. If the student returns to the campus without written permission during the suspension period, their eligibility to return to Coker may be jeopardized. Upon completing the suspension, the student will be placed on disciplinary probation for the duration of the semester they return.
    18. Warning: A written reprimand to the student for the violations specified, including but not limited to notice that repeated violations may be cause for further disciplinary action.
  4. Action Item(s) that include housing suspension, suspension from the University or expulsion from the University will be recommended by the Accountability Hearing board to the Student Experience Office. The hearing process will not be considered final until the Student Experience Office reviews the recommendation, makes a final determination and meets with the Respondent to communicate the outcome.
