BIO 360 Applied Ecology
(Cross Reference: ES360) A study of the ecological bases for the human environmental predicament. Topics will include: the structure and function of ecosystems and services they provide to human populations; the principles of population dynamics and their application to human populations; the distribution and characteristics of biomes in relation to human land use; the current and projected production of human food; the current and projected human use of land, water, forests, and energy; pollution and other disruptions to ecological services; the social and political context of some environmental problems and their potential solutions. Laboratory studies will include the study of techniques to quantify anthropomorphic modifications of ecological communities, and the technologies used to reduce or ameliorate human environmental impacts. Prerequisites: BIO210 or ES/BIO103. (Offered as needed) Lab fee required.
